Thank you for supporting the Friends of the Hawaiian Islands National Wildlife Refuge (FoHI)! Our mission as a Friends group is to support the Hawaiian Islands National Wildlife Refuge (HINWR or Hawaiian Islands NWR) and to connect you with the nature and culture of Papahānaumokuākea Marine National Monument. We are also a connection to the National Wildlife Refuge System broadly, especially here in Hawaiʻi. Through your membership with FoHI, we hope to connect you to these special places, their cultural significance, and the species that live there.

We are fundraising for the following projects
Laysan Finch (ʻekupuʻu) Translocation Project
The ʻekupuʻu population on Manawai (Pearl & Hermes Atoll) is vulnerable to significant storm events that could extirpate the local population. The atoll has been washed over in large storm events, which prompted the efforts to relocate this population to a safer islet, Eastern Island on Kuaihelani (Midway Atoll). Amidst federal funding uncertainty with our US Fish and Wildlife Service partners, we are fundraising to help this project move forward.
Specifically the translocation needs funds for Finch Food ($500 total), supplies to make bird holding and transfer cages ($160/cage), room and board on Midway ($180/person/day), and travel to/from Midway ($7,500x5). To donate, select "Custom amount" in the options above and leave us a comment that you are donating to the Finch project!
Alternatively, visit our Bonfire store for the "Buy a Shirt, Feed a Finch" campaign. Each purchase raises around $10 for FoHI. You can increase your impact, and make a tax deductible donation when you make your purchase.

Bolus Education Kits!
Albatross boluses from Papahānaumokuākea are mailed all over the world to teach students about the life history of seabirds. Seabirds are impacted by marine debris, and this educational tool brings the threats to wildlife directly into the hands of our future environmental stewards. Your donation will provide bolus dissection kit supplies, including dissection trays, dissection tools, glass mason jars, organizer trays, clear casting and coating epoxy resin, storage desiccants |

Quarantine Clothing and Field Supplies!
The islands within Papahānaumokuākea are fragile ecosystems and vulnerable to introduced species. All personnel accessing the islands must adhere to strict biosecurity rules to prevent the spread of unwanted alien pests. All clothing and soft goods used on the islands must be purchased new, and can be a large expense for research volunteers. Furthermore, food for these excursions is not always covered. Your donation will help to offset the costs that volunteers incur when donating their time to the Refuge. |

General Fund for Friends of Hawaiian Islands!
We are an entirely volunteer-run organization with exciting goals. Donations to our general fund help keep the lights on. We hope to develop a curriculum about the cultural and natural history of Papahānaumokuākea Marine National Monument. Furthermore, your donation helps us advocate in the legislature for our Refuge system and wildlife protection. |
